The Ninth Annual Newport Bucket Regatta
August 25 - 28, 2011

August 24, 2011

Uninvited Guest Irene Cancels Racing…. But not the Party! More on the recap page

The Captains met with Event Director Peter Craig and Bucket Director Hank Halsted Wednesday evening. It was the consensus (among all nine boat captains represented) that Irene’s very real threat has made a no-race decision on Saturday the only choice. Transitioning from race mode to storm mode for superyachts is extremely time-consuming.

Five Bucket yachts are currently in Martha’s Vineyard for the lobster bake and feeder race to Newport. While Irene has nixed the race, Thursday’s dinner party will be spectacular.  Three of the five yachts are repositioning to Maine on Friday.

While yachts will be preparing and positioning for the storm, there are owners, crew and guests who will be able to enjoy the Bucket Bash at the Newport Shipyard. The Bash, which has been moved from Saturday to Friday will feature all the food and festivities planned for this special 25th Anniversary Celebration.

Every effort was made by the event organizer and the boat captains to squeeze in a race, and while that was not meant to be, the Bucket Spirit lives on!

Anticipation for the Texas Legends Airshow was running high, but unfortunately those shows also had to be cancelled because of the severity of the storm.

We wish everyone safe harbor from the storm and safe travels.

Nineteen yachts are entered!

In reflecting on of the history of the Bucket, founding Director Captain Timothy Laughridge recalls many yachts under the current 100 foot superyacht LOA criteria. Some of these races occurred during the lay days of the Americas Cup in New Zealand and San Diego, with a special ‘Demi Class’ Mini-America’s Cup trophy created by Mr. Nelson Doubleday.

As such, the 25th Anniversary event will offer a ‘Bucket Demi Class’. We invite all yachts with an LOA between 76 and 99 feet. Experience the unique Bucket spirit and don’t miss this opportunity to be a part of Bucket history.

Planning is well underway to make this a truly memorable event.  For those yacht owners looking for a little more fun and racing, the 25th will include a Bucket Rendezvous on Martha’s Vineyard Thursday, with a Friday feeder race to Newport where the anniversary regatta will begin in earnest. There will be separate, special awards for the race from the Vineyard to Newport.

Participating yachts will anchor in Edgartown Harbor off Chappaquiddick north beach and there is also limited dockage available in Edgartown Harbor.  Captain David Murphy, a longtime supporter of Bucket regattas, has kindly offered his Chappy private hideout the Tumble Inn to host the fleet for a lobster bake with live music, dancing and a surprise theme.

For your Vineyard accommodations, please contact Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket Reservations. This is "high season" and early reservations are encouraged. Call +1 508-693-7200 or visit the web site. The Chamber of Commerce also has helpful planning information on thier web site www.MVY.com

The Newport regatta will again be headquartered at the Newport Shipyard.

All owners and crew are invited to the welcoming party, which will be held at the historic Fort Adams. The historic casemates in the largest coastal fortification in this country have never been open to the general public. The museum will be open to Bucket partygoers that evening as well.

For your planning purposes, the Preliminary Event Schedule is below. Stay tuned for more exciting plans and details in the coming weeks.
